WHAT IS Therapeutic art?

Therapeutic art supports us to communicate and express our feelings and thoughts through visual imagery when words are hard to find or simply not enough. Creativity is a powerful tool for self-exploration and examining how we relate to others.
Therapeutic art utilises artistic processes, such as painting, drawing, art-making, collage, writing and storytelling— or nature-based materials such as clay, sand or found objects for sensory, tactile exploration. The potential benefits may include a reduction in stress and anxiety by lowering cortisol levels, the body's primary stress hormone.
Used therapeutically, creativity can be empowering and may feel very cathartic. It uses imagination, innovation, and original expression as a primary means of communication, storytelling, and problem-solving. Creative expression can act as a universal language that transcends the boundaries of conventional communication. It supports self-discovery and emotional expression in a non-judgmental space. Creativity builds resilience by reconnecting us to ourselves, the environment and each other.
Each therapeutic art session will explore a specific theme and guide you through a process of narrative storytelling using a range of materials and techniques. The emphasis is on the creative process rather than ‘art’ making, or the end result.
Sessions are online to allow you the flexibility to connect wherever you are. A quiet, comfortable, and distraction-free space will maximise the therapeutic benefit of your session. No special art materials, skill or previous artistic experience is required.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THERAPEUTIC ART AND ART THERAPY?

Therapeutic art is different from clinical art therapy. Therapeutic art is a non-clinical activity focused on wellbeing through creative expression and without diagnostic or treatment-based goals. Alternatively, art therapy treats diagnosed conditions through a formal clinical therapeutic relationship.
My approach to therapeutic arts emphasises sovereign creative expression. As a visual storyteller and designer I am focused on how we think, feel, and express our creative voice. I will work within your area of interest and need, to explore how the creative process can support and benefit you.

What is my APPROACH?

SCOPE OF PRACTICE: Therapeutic art encourages the interconnectedness and continuous relationship between the body, mind and emotions, community and culture, the environment and the creative process/practice.
STORYTELLING: Visual storytelling is the art of conveying narratives, emotions, and information through creative materials. This is done by centering our lived experience of creativity and cultural identity and by sharing our stories with a curious mind and an open heart. I view creativity beyond a colonial lens honouring Indigenous, non-Western and other alternative ways of knowing.
ACCOUNTABILITY: I centre culturally responsive art-making and recognise that many experience overlapping systems of discrimination, including race, gender, disability, immigration status, religion, class. I acknowledge the colonial paradigm as both historical event and ongoing system that is often layered and context-driven. My approach is rooted in care and committed to kindness, respect, dignity and non-violence.
I offer a complimentary 20 minute call to answer any questions you may have and to discuss the possibility of working together.
